FDNY, NYPD retirees who ‘faked’ 9/11 illnesses in scam’.
You know, it’s not often that I find myself at a loss for words, but here we are. It had to happen at some point.
I will just leave this one for you to decide, but before I do, I want to point out that some-one stood up for these guys. Some-one went against the grain fighting for those emergency first responders to get just a little bit of assistance from the States. I am saddened by this turn of events.
So, let’s take a look:
‘They were among 106 alleged scammers arrested in a $400 million Social Security rip-off — one of the largest in history — that also included city Correction officers and a former Nassau County cop.’
‘Many of the retirees said they were so mentally incapacitated that they couldn’t even use a computer, drive a car or fly in a plane. But investigators found a treasure trove of damning evidence on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube — along with car-rental, shopping and airline receipts.’
‘“My client has pled not guilty, and he looks forward to defending himself in court,” said Keith O’Halloran, an attorney for defendant Douglas Hale. Hale is the son of one of the four alleged ringleaders, who allegedly took kickbacks for coaching retirees on how to feign mental trauma to qualify for SSDI.’
‘This second surge of arrest activity followed 106 indictments and arrests that began Jan. 7. The 106 arrested included 102 disability beneficiaries and four scheme facilitators—Raymond Lavallee, 83, an attorney; Thomas Hale, 89, a disability consultant; and Joseph Esposito, 70, and John Minerva, 61, two “recruiters.” ‘
‘Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said the fraud could be as large as $400 million and that hundreds may be arrested.”’
‘At least 70 of the 134 defendants indicted so far have entered guilty pleas, many in exchange for no-jail sentences that require them to pay back the benefits they fraudulently collected. The Social Security Administration has agreed to spare those offenders from fines that could soar into the millions per person, sources said.’
‘“If you cooperate fully, 100 percent with anything the DA wants — this could include testifying at trial — you will be permitted to replead” to the lesser charge, which carries a sentence of one to three years, FitzGerald said.’
So, what do you think was the response to this nastiness?:
‘For example, if you are diagnosed with a 9/11 related cancer any time after 9/12/2014, you will NOT be able to claim valuable monetary and medical benefits from the Workers’ Compensation Board if you do not file the WTC-12 form by September 11, 2014. Even if you are not currently sick, please protect yourself by filing a WTC-12 form TODAY. You’ll be glad you did’
http://www.disabledworkerlaw.comWill that effect anyone who genuinely needs assistance? I don’t know. I do know that it is shameful to hear of these people CLAIMING to be ill as a direct result of this, and then finding out they weren’t even there that day. And to add insult to injury, essentially BRAGGING about it on social media. Shame on you. Shame.Just in case anyone forgot, THIS is what else Jon Stewart did because he was instrumental in getting that bill passed, but he couldn’t just leave it there.
Would he do it again, knowing there are people out to make a quick buck? I don’t know, but I am starting to see the humanity in humans slipping ever further away.
