Jonathan Pollard Free
Justice has prevailed at last! My original article on this was published on Jan 2, 2014. That story is below this update. Sometimes good things do happen and now is the perfect time to let everybody know the whole story:
Israel spy Pollard freed by US after 30 years in prison
‘The 61-year-old was freed on Friday morning, ending one of the longest-running and most contentious issues between the US and Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Israeli people welcomed his release.
“As someone who has raised Jonathan Pollard’s case for many years with US presidents, I have wished for this day.
“After 30 long and hard years, Jonathan Pollard is finally reuniting with his family,” Mr Netanyahu’s spokesperson tweeted’
Jonathan’s crime is detailed below. It really makes you wonder what would happen to Snowden and Assange:

Israel signs petition to free US spy
Israeli lawmakers have signed a petition to free an US spy sentenced to life after leaking secret documents to Tel Aviv. The petition, signed by 106 out of 120 Knesset members will now be delivered to the White House by Israeli President Shimon Peres. Israel is asking for the release of convicted spy Jonathan Pollard who is now serving life in prison. Pollard was arrested in 1985 for leaking thousands of classified US Navy documents to Israel. Tel Aviv has intensified pressure on Washington to release Pollard following the recent Snowden NSA spying revelations.
Okay, this looks like an uncomplicated story. Seems pretty simple. A guy leaked US documents to Israel and they want to show their appreciation by asking for his release. The argument here is, clearly that, well Snowden did it.
‘Jonathan Jay Pollard (born August 7, 1954) is an American prison inmate who pleaded guilty in 1987 to selling classified information to Israel while working as a civilian intelligence analyst. He was sentenced to life in prison; but because his offenses were committed prior to November 1987, he could become eligible for parole as early as November 2015.’ – Wikipedia.
So, he is eligible for parole this year? and he pleaded guilty in 1987? 28/29 years ago? What? Why is this guy so special for them that they forgot him for over a quarter of a decade? Who is Johnathan Pollard?
‘Israel granted Pollard citizenship in 1995,’ – Wikipedia.
‘Pollard discovered that information vital to Israel’s security was being deliberately withheld by certain elements within the U.S. national security establishment.’
‘The information being withheld from Israel included Syrian, Iraqi, Libyan and Iranian nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare capabilities – being developed for use against Israel.’
‘Jonathan Pollard never had a trial.’
‘Pollard received a life sentence and a recommendation that he never be paroled – in complete violation of the plea agreement he had reached with the government.’
‘No one else in the history of the United States has ever received a life sentence for passing classified information to an ally – only Jonathan Pollard.’
‘Jonathan Pollard has been openly linked to the Middle East Peace Process since 1995.’
‘The Wye Plantation summit is a prime example of U.S. exploitation of Jonathan Pollard. ‘
My, my, my. Well isn’t this a turn up for the books? Can I smell hypocrisy? It goes on, but read the link. It’s incredible. I chose just a few of these facts because I have questions (who doesn’t right?), but there are over 50, however I have to question the very last ‘fact’ first:
On November 21, 2014, Jonathan Pollard entered the 30th year of his life sentence, with no end in sight.
Not really. 2014-1987 (according to RT)=27. Still, no matter I probably didn’t include a year or two of trials, detainment and the ever popular enhanced interrogation techniques. Also whilst he has his first parole hearing this year, there is a glimmer of hope that the end is actually in sight after all.
I apologize if that makes me sound pedantic, but you know what debunkers are like. If one fact is wrong, then they are all wrong.
Right, so where was I? Oh yes.
What is The Wye Plantation Summit?
Waste of time and resources, by the sound of it.
Let’s look at this with an outsiders eye. Johnathan Pollard pleaded guilty in 1985. He was charged with ‘passing classified information to an ally, without intent to harm the United States’. Not treason, not Acts of Terrorism. Just the one charge. He is sentenced to life, without parole.
Edward Snowden started working for the NSA in 2013, some 18 years later. The charges against him are ‘theft of government property, and two counts of violating the U.S. 1917 Espionage Act through unauthorized communication of national defense information and “willful communication of classified communications intelligence information to an unauthorized person.”‘ These carry a maximum possible prison term of ten years each. Snowden’s legal representative, Jesselyn Radack is quoted as saying “the Espionage Act effectively hinders a person from defending himself before a jury in an open court, as past examples show,” Radack said that the “arcane World War I law” was never meant to prosecute whistle blowers, but rather spies who sold secrets to enemies for profit. Under this law, she states, “no prosecution of a non-spy can be fair or just.” – Wikipedia.
Israel have taken full responsibility for Pollard, even going so far as to grant him Israeli citizenship. He has repeatedly expressed remorse for passing information to Israel, that they were actually entitled to be made aware of. Remorseful for following ‘the law’. Beggars believe, doesn’t it?
Snowden has done none of this. No-one wants to grant him citizenship, although many civilians have pushed for it.
So, it seems that if you are a good man, with honorable intent, your punishment will be excessive, whereas if you’re a chancer, your likely to get off scot-free. Pollard DID enter into an agreement, which was then used to wipe the Governments ass, apparently.
‘‘Clinton knew that a successful summit at Wye just before the Congressional elections would be good not only for his image, but would also reap great political benefits for the Democrats in their bid to regain control of Congress. As an inducement to Netanyahu, Clinton promised to release Jonathan Pollard within the context of the summit.Understanding the value of Jonathan Pollard for his own re-election bid, and needing him as a sweetener to sell any kind of “peace” deal to the Israeli people, Netanyahu ignored the entreaties of Republican friends like Newt Gingrich and agreed to attend the summit.‘Once the Wye summit was underway, Clinton quickly “forgot” his promise to free Jonathan Pollard and there was little Netanyahu could do.’
Funny, I can believe this of the then US president.
‘The US and Israel agreed to the Palestinian plan to swap Pollard for terrorists and murderers. President Clinton personally worked out the details of the deal in a late-night private session with a Palestinian and an Israeli representative. According to the deal, Prime Minister Netanyahu was to receive a side letter from President Clinton the next morning (one of approximately 30 side letters the Americans had promised) guaranteeing Pollard’s release for November 11, 1998, one week after the US House elections. The Pollard negotiation was the deal-maker at Wye which allowed the summit to be successfully wrapped up and a signing ceremony to be planned for the next morning in Washington, on Friday October 23, 1998. Only hours before the signing ceremony, P.M. Netanyahu received all of the American side-letters that had been promised to him, except one – the one guaranteeing the release of Jonathan Pollard.
Netanyahu demanded that in the absence of a side letter of guarantee, Pollard should be freed into his custody immediately, or no signing ceremony. Arik Sharon supported Netanyahu and they threatened to leave Wye without signing the accord. In order to take the pressure off of President Clinton, CIA chief George Tenet quickly leaked the news of Pollard’s imminent release to the media in a deliberate – and ultimately successful – attempt to torpedo the deal.’
‘Meanwhile at Wye, under heavy pressure and still fearful that Netanyahu would not back down, Clinton quickly negotiated a private fall-back position with Netanyahu: Clinton would publicly promise to do a “speedy review”of the Pollard Case and he would use that review to free Pollard a few months later, parallel to the release of the 750 Palestinian terrorists who were part of the price Israel had agreed to pay for Pollard.’
‘Eye witnesses to the Pollard deal at Wye, including the Israeli and the Palestinian who had negotiated the deal with Clinton and the former Israeli Cabinet Secretary, all later contradicted the White House version of events and affirmed that President Clinton had committed himself to the release of Jonathan Pollard as an integral part of the Wye Accords.’
‘When Netanyahu returned to Israel after Wye, he created a firestorm of publicity by releasing 200 Palestinian common criminals from Israeli prisons. The Palestinians were outraged, and insisted that these common criminals were not the prisoners that they had bargained for at Wye. The Americans angrily protested. Netanyahu reminded the Americans that the Wye Accords do not specify exactly which prisoners Israel must release. Critics wondered if the Prime Minister had lost his mind to antagonize the Americans this way.’
Why have I included these ‘facts’ of the whole sorry mess?
Am I surprised that nobody trusts America anymore? Do I blame Snowden for not doing what his Government demands? Why hasn’t O’bozo made this right, rebuilt relations with Israel and Palestine?
‘In November, eight former high-level US officials penned a strongly worded letter to US President Barack Obama denouncing a decision to deny Pollard parole in August, and charging the administration with basing the rejection on a “patently false” claim.
The document slammed the “unjust denial” of the request, the first Pollard had made after nearly 30 years behind bars, and voiced its “strongest objections” to the “deeply flawed” legal decision.
The signatories — who include former CIA director James Woolsey, and Lawrence J. Korb, former assistant US secretary of defense — maintained they “are fully familiar with the Pollard file and with its classified contents.”
Other signatories included two former chairs of the Senate Intelligence Committee, a former US National Security Adviser, a former White House counsel and a homeland security adviser’:
Okay, so there are quite a few ‘heavy weights’ backing Pollards release. Still haven’t heard why the answer is no though?
‘The Obama administration is reportedly considering freeing spy Jonathan Pollard in return for concessions from the Israeli government.’ – WHAT?? After what Clinton did last time, do you really think that’s a good move? Once bitten, twice shy. I can’t help but think America are blatantly saying to Israel ‘who’s my bitch? Your my bitch’. What else?
Why the U.S. doesn’t want him free
‘Many in the U.S. intelligence community feel strongly that Pollard should not be released: In 1998, George J. Tenet, then director of the CIA, apparently scuppered a deal with Israel on Pollard by threatening to resign if the spy went free.’
Of course, there are those who have spread propaganda to ensure Pollard is not released. I haven’t as yet, been able to proof or dispute these facts, possibly because the guy himself spent an estimated 15 years in solitary confinement, however, to keep it fair, this is a snippet of that propaganda:
‘Even now, while his supporters portray Pollard as an ideologue, other critics in the United States point to reports of his drug abuse and history of grandiose lies. A year ago, Bret Stephens of the Wall Street Journal minced no words when he argued that Pollard’s release is, in fact, not in Israel’s interests:
It does not help Israel to make a hero of a compulsive liar and braggart, fond of cocaine, who violated his oaths, spied on his country, inflicted damage that took billions of dollars to repair, accepted payment for his spying, jeopardized Israel’s relationship with its closest ally, failed to show remorse at the time of his sentencing, made himself into Exhibit A of every anti-Semitic conspiracy nut, and then had the chutzpah to call himself a martyr to the Jewish people.’
If he lied, why is he in prison serving a life sentence? What damage was inflicted? Are you kidding me? The USA WITHHELD information about dangers to Israel! That was the jeopardy here. How could that jeopardize Israel, if according to you bonehead, he is a ‘compulsive liar and braggart’? I don’t imagine Israel are in the habit of handing out handfuls of $100 bills for confirmed falsehoods do you?
Just out of interest: Where is Pollard getting cocaine from? I imagine that after 15 odd years of solitary confinement, he might just be clean of any and all drugs wouldn’t you? Unless of course, you are suggesting the guards are dealing drugs to him? Are you?
What’s happening now (and what might happen next)
‘Over the past few years, the Israeli campaign to release Pollard has gained momentum, with Netanyahu expressing official support, a number of petitions, and protests outside the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv. President Obama has so far refused to contemplate releasing Pollard and has refused to grant him leave for family emergencies. “As the president,” Obama told Israeli television before visiting the country last year, “my first obligation is to observe the law here in the United States and to make sure that it’s applied consistently.”
(Except in the many many cases on public record, of course. But clearly this is the only one you feel you can negotiate with).
‘However, there have been some signs of a shifting position on Pollard, who is now 59 and said to be in poor health. Some people you might not expect, such as Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz), have publicly called for his release. His situation has been complicated by the leaks of Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden, the latter of whom provided a document that reportedly revealed the NSA may have targeted Netanyahu himself.
The biggest factor now, however, is the Middle East peace process that Secretary of State John F. Kerry launched eight months ago. The hope appears to be that if the United States agreed to release Pollard, Israel might agree to release some of a large number of Palestinian prisoners or impose a moratorium on new building in disputed territories, key sticking points for the Palestinian negotiators.
Such a move — the release of a criminal charged in American courts in exchange for concessions from another country — would be exceptional for the United States (get to fuck), and it likely reflects a moment of crisis in the talks. There is another factor to keep in mind, however: currently Pollard will be eligible for release in November 2015, as he will have served 30 years of his sentence.’
Exceptional eh? Really? Lets see who the liar is here:
There’s at least 8.
Okay, so that’s another 5.
And just a couple of days ago:
Hm, would you look at that. Another 5. That’s over 718 ‘exceptional’ cases of prisoners being released.
So, firstly, I apologize for my outrage at this blatant and unashamed manipulation by America to exert any kind of dominance of Israel. Deliberately manipulating and prolonging the suffering of a single guy who, in effect only followed the rules of the 1983 Memorandum of Understanding between America and Israel. Clearly this guy was incarcerated only because America got caught with its pants down. How embarrassing.
But to add insult to injury stating that America couldn’t possibly make an exception to release this guy into the custody of Israel, no, no, no. That just couldn’t be done, at the same time releasing over 700 people in to the custody of other countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq.
Shame. Shame on you.
Hopefully, the President will see that people are not happy with this unexplained decision to keep Jonathan Pollard locked up for no valid reason and uphold his parole hearing. Let the man go already.
*I am really glad that O’Bozo saw sense with this. My only advice to Pollard is run. Run as fast as you can. You will always be under surveillance. Any time the Government want you, they got you. Get to Israel. And God bless you.
